I have returned the mac pro and the monitor to Apple on 3 occassions and swapped the units, now IвЂ™ve just given up. It seems to come back when I leave the mac on for long periods, suggesting that it may be overheating or something. I find that if I shut down and turn off power supply the problem temporarily goes away. I have the same problem on a 2 year old 30вЂі cinema display вЂ“ changed cards from a dodgy ati radeon x1900 to a geoforce the problems still here. And if you work at AppleвЂ¦hey, what are you guys doing there? Remember us, the customers? If youвЂ™re considering such a large monitor, I urge you to avoid the temptation to buy the Apple product until the company deals with this problem. Word on the street is that it doesnвЂ™t have this problem. I should have saved a few hundred dollars and bought the Dell 30-inch monitor instead. I bought the Apple 30-inch monitor ($2,000) because it looks so nice on my desk. This isnвЂ™t a minor issue these green pixels can be all over the screen. As others in the discussion point out, IвЂ™m amazed that Apple continues to sell a product with such a significant known defect. The company continues to replace monitors under warranty, but the replacements always have the same problem. Referred to as the вЂњflickering/dancing pixel problem,вЂќ it has been the subject of an ongoing discussion for well over two years with more than 400 messages posted to the thread! As far as any of us can tell, Apple has never acknowledged this problem or offered a fix to anyone. Well, it turns out this is a problem shared by a very large number of users. If I understand correctly, that 'Converter' would pass through the DisplayPort signal and additionally create PCIe lanes out of thin air, connected to nothing.IвЂ™ve been fortunate to have a terrific computing setup here for the past nine months: a quad-core Intel Mac Pro with 1.25TB disk, 4GB RAM, and *both* a 23вЂі and 30вЂі monitor. Now why Apple made a display that accepted ONLY Thunderbolt? I really wouldn't want to guess. You would have to essentially build a mini-computer to convert DP to Thunderbolt if you could get it to work at all as the adapter would be trying to fool the display into thinking it was really an internal bus on the PC.ДЄs someone with an Electrical Engineer degree, I completely understand why there is no adapter.

The DisplayPort on the PC doesn't have access to anything internal to the PC that would make Thunderbolt work. Thunderbolt is essentially an external PCI-E connector. This reminds me of the shenanigans Steve Jobs played with FireWire, which led to its being crushed in the marketplace by USB2. The 'stupid omission by Apple' I was referring to was the still-extant omission of a converter. Maybe it was short-sighted of Apple, but I think it was pretty clear what the TB Display was for, and that was for Thunderbolt-equipped computers. I suppose Apple could have added Mini DisplayPort capability as well, but then USB, Firewire, and ethernet wouldn't work without additional pass-through cables. The Thunderbolt Display was introduced in 2011 before USB C was a thing. I'm not sure it is fair to call it a 'stupid omission' by Apple. If so, that seems to put a 'for use with Macintoshes only' label on true Thunderbolt displays. After doing a bit of Google-searching it seems that may be true, but I thought I at least should ask. However what I was trying to get my head around was the idea that there actually does not exist any converter that will convert video output from a PC, either from a USB C port or an HDMI port, to true Thunderbolt protocol. Maybe I shouldn't have included the information in parentheses in the quoted post at all. This article (second paragraph) on Low End Mac says my Early 2011 MBP has a Thunderbolt port that uses the MiniDP connector, and I had already gathered that my connection to my LED Cinema Display was using the MiniDP capabilities of that port. The standard Cinema Display used mini Displayport, but in spite of the Thunderbolt display appearing to have the same connector, the Thunderbolt display requires an actual Thunderbolt port. Your display is a completely different thing. Forgive my fuddy-duddy ignorance (I have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro with a Thunderbolt/MiniDisplayPort port, and that connects fine to my inherited 2010 Apple LED Cinema Display's MiniDP input-either directly or through my ATEN C782DP KVM switch).
